Designed by the French National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM), in collaboration with medical societies and powered by Suadeo’s data platform, Visuchir’s data visualization tools help healthcare facilities benchmark their surgical practices. On the eve of a major national survey on the appropriateness of hospital stays, Visuchir is once again demonstrating its value in shaping the future of surgery in France and improving the quality of care.
On September 30, Dr. Gilles Bontemps presented findings drawn from the analysis of Visuchir data at the French Academy of Surgery. Le Point magazine subsequently featured a column on the future of surgical sites and the growth of outpatient surgery, in which the author described the database as having no equivalent: “I don’t believe there is anything comparable anywhere in the world.” (Le Point).
Visuchir covers all surgical procedures performed across 900 French healthcare facilities, with five years of historical data. Primarily designed for healthcare professionals, these data visualization tools are freely accessible without login on the data.ameli.fr website (explore Visuchir).
A tool for dialogue and practical applications
In the spotlight: the national survey launched on October 15 to assess the appropriateness of hospital stays. The official circular asks Regional Health Agencies to encourage hospitals to use Visuchir to analyse their use of outpatient surgery. According to Hospimedia, the findings will inform assessments of the clinical appropriateness of continued inpatient care, with a view to improving hospital care and bed management.
Healthcare facilities also use Visuchir to demonstrate and showcase their results.
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Gustave Roussy uses Visuchir to assess its practices and the quality of care provided to its patients. The findings position the institution as France’s leading centre for breast surgery and breast reconstruction (read the article: Breast cancer: Gustave Roussy, France’s leading centre for breast surgery and reconstruction | Gustave Roussy). The institute recorded 2 376 breast plastic and reconstructive procedures in 2024.
These applications, all geared towards improving the quality of care and patient outcomes, are made possible by the tool’s underlying capabilities. Visuchir enables users to analyse and compare practices across 36 million surgical procedures. It draws on France’s national hospital discharge database (PMSI), covering more than 900 healthcare facilities and six million hospital stays per year.
For a data platform, this is tangible proof that open healthcare data, effectively visualised through an intuitive tool that makes data easier to understand and use, can support decision-making, transparency and public debate. Suadeo is proud to contribute to this major public-interest initiative.
